Intelligent Reviews for Lasting Knowledge

Spaced repetition is one of the most thoroughly researched learning methods today. Its principle is simple: material is reviewed at deliberately increasing intervals.

Reviews are therefore not scheduled at random, but at systematically planned times. Cards that are already securely mastered appear less often. Cards answered incorrectly or with uncertainty become due sooner.

Pauk combines this proven principle with a clear box system and freely adjustable review intervals. The result is a learning mode that automatically distributes material over longer periods while remaining transparent at all times.

The Principle of Spaced Repetition

Every flashcard has its own individual review date.

After every grade, Pauk automatically determines when the card should be studied again based on the learning level reached and the configured intervals. The more securely a card is mastered, the longer the gap until its next review.

Uncertain cards, by contrast, appear again sooner.

Each study session therefore focuses exclusively on cards for which a review is currently useful.

Six Learning Levels in Pauk

Like Leitner mode, spaced repetition in Pauk uses six learning levels from box 0 through box 5.

With every correct answer, a card moves up one box.

An incorrect answer returns it to box 0.

Unlike Leitner mode, however, the box alone does not determine when a card reappears. Its individual review date is what matters.

Study Exactly When It Makes Sense

In spaced-repetition mode, Pauk displays only cards whose review date has been reached or has already passed.

Cards with a date in the future are deliberately omitted.

Each study session therefore focuses on the material that is currently relevant.

If no cards are due, today's review is complete.

The Order of the Cards

If several cards are due at the same time, Pauk starts with those whose review is furthest overdue.

This automatically gives priority to cards that have been overdue the longest.

Correct Answers Extend the Review Intervals

Every correct answer raises a card's learning status.

At the same time, Pauk calculates the next review date based on the new learning level.

By default, Pauk uses the following intervals:

With every successful review, the interval before the next study session therefore increases.

Errors Do Not Lead to Immediate Repetition

When a card is answered incorrectly, its learning path starts again.

The card returns to box 0 and is immediately marked as due again.

If other cards are due, however, it does not reappear straight away.

Pauk first works through the other due cards. The incorrectly answered card can then appear again.

The cards in between prevent the answer from being repeated immediately from short-term memory alone. The later review thereby strengthens long-term learning.

Adjust Review Intervals Individually

Not everyone learns in the same way.

That is why Pauk lets you fully adapt the review intervals to your own needs.

For example, you can individually define

  • the intervals during the first learning phases,
  • the first review interval in box 5,
  • and regular reviews of cards in box 5.

Pauk automatically checks that the selected intervals remain sensible and build on one another logically.

Learning Progress Visible at All Times

Pauk displays how cards are distributed across the six learning levels and which reviews are currently due.

With every correct answer, a card moves up one learning level.

Pauk also stores the next review date for every card and automatically organizes upcoming study sessions from these dates.

You therefore do not need to remember when individual material should be studied again.

Exam Readiness

Pauk also calculates your personal exam readiness in spaced-repetition mode.

It deliberately distinguishes between learning progress and exam readiness.

Even a first correct answer represents important learning progress.

For a high level of exam readiness, however, this is not yet enough. Only several successful reviews over longer periods show that the knowledge has been retained.

Pauk also takes the scope of each card into account. Cards containing more facts therefore have a greater influence on the overall result than very simple cards.

Why Spaced Repetition Is So Effective

Human memory forgets information over time.

Every well-timed review strengthens the memory and extends the time until the information is forgotten again.

Spaced repetition uses exactly this effect.

Instead of constantly reviewing every card, Pauk focuses on the material whose review currently offers the greatest benefit.

This means less time is spent on knowledge that is already securely mastered and more time on material that actually needs to be reviewed.

Spaced Repetition or Leitner?

Both learning methods pursue the same goal: anchoring knowledge permanently in memory.

The difference lies in how cards are selected.

Leitner works through complete study runs containing every card below box 5.

Spaced repetition displays only cards whose individual review date has been reached.

Learners who want to work through all their material regularly will find a clearly structured study flow in Leitner mode.

Learners who want to study as efficiently as possible over longer periods benefit from the automatically controlled review plan in spaced-repetition mode.
