For decades, the Leitner system has been one of the most successful methods for retaining knowledge. Its basic principle is as simple as it is effective: flashcards are not all treated alike but organized according to the learner's individual level of knowledge.

Cards that are already securely mastered require less attention. Uncertain material, by contrast, is repeated until it is firmly anchored in memory.

The Principle of the Leitner System

Each flashcard belongs to one learning box at a time.

New cards begin in box 0. When a card is answered correctly, it moves up one level. After an incorrect answer, it starts again from the beginning.

Each card therefore develops its own learning path. Uncertain material remains part of the active study list, while cards retained in box 5 disappear from normal Leitner runs.

The goal is to move every card step by step to the highest learning level.

The Six Leitner Boxes in Pauk

Pauk uses six learning boxes, from box 0 through box 5.

Every correct answer moves a card one level further.

An incorrect answer returns it to box 0.

Once a card reaches box 5, it is at the highest learning level.

How Pauk Studies in Leitner Mode

At the start of a Leitner run, Pauk creates a study list containing every card that has not yet reached box 5.

These cards are then presented exactly once in deck order.

The flow is deliberately simple:

  • The question is displayed.
  • The answer initially remains hidden.
  • After revealing it, you grade your answer.
  • Pauk immediately assigns the card to its new box.
  • The next card then appears.

The study run ends automatically after the last card.

This creates a clearly structured study flow without interruptions or repetitions within the same run.

Every Study Run Remains Easy to Follow

At the beginning of a Leitner run, Pauk determines which cards will be studied.

This selection remains unchanged until the end.

As a result, every card appears exactly once during a run.

Even if a card changes boxes while you study, this does not alter the current run. Pauk considers the new learning state the next time you start.

This creates a calm, predictable, and easy-to-understand study flow.

Learned Cards Disappear Automatically

Cards in box 5 are at the highest learning level.

They are therefore no longer displayed in normal Leitner mode.

As your learning progresses, the active material becomes smaller automatically. Your attention increasingly shifts toward content that has not yet been fully mastered.

Review Individual Learning Levels

Every Leitner box can be reviewed separately in Pauk.

This lets you repeat only new cards, focus on difficult material, or check cards from the highest learning level again before an exam.

The same Leitner rules apply during a box review. Correct answers move cards up; incorrect answers return them to box 0.

This makes box reviews an excellent way to focus on individual learning levels.

No Time Requirements - Full Focus on the Material

In Leitner mode, the current learning state alone decides what appears, not the date.

Every card below box 5 is included in the next Leitner run.

This mode is especially suitable if you want to work through your entire deck regularly.

If you prefer time-based reviews, you can use Pauk's spaced-repetition mode instead.

Make Learning Progress Visible

While you study, Pauk always shows the Leitner box of the current card.

It also displays the number of cards in each box.

At a glance, you can see:

  • how many cards are still new,
  • which material has already been answered correctly several times,
  • and how many cards have reached the highest learning level.

This keeps your overall progress transparent at all times.

Exam Readiness

In addition to the Leitner boxes, Pauk calculates your personal exam readiness.

Pauk deliberately distinguishes between learning progress and exam readiness.

Reaching box 1 is already an important success. The card has been answered correctly for the first time and has taken its first step in the learning process.

For exam readiness, however, one correct answer is not enough. Only several successful reviews indicate that the knowledge is truly stable.

This distinction prevents a single correct answer from overstating the learner's level of knowledge.

At the same time, Pauk recognizes every success through the visible move to the next Leitner box.

When calculating exam readiness, Pauk also considers the scope of each card. Cards containing more facts have a correspondingly larger influence on the overall result.

Why the Leitner System Is So Successful

The Leitner system is based on active recall.

Instead of merely reading a solution, you first try to retrieve it from memory. This process strengthens memory traces over time.

By repeatedly confirming correct answers, cards move step by step into higher learning levels.

Errors, by contrast, cause a card to be built up again until the knowledge is secure.

This creates a learning process that consistently follows your current learning state.

Pauk supports both learning methods.

Leitner is particularly suitable if you want to work through all your active material regularly and follow your progress directly.

Spaced repetition, by contrast, calculates individual review times and distributes reviews automatically over longer periods.

Both methods pursue the same goal - lasting knowledge - but emphasize different approaches.
